The ma(r)k(et)ing of the artist

“He’s (kinda) doll” would I say when observing this promo pic from nickis portfolio, maybe contrasting the famous “He’s a doll” claim on Ken doll’s original box. Nickis is an emerging singer, also much in the OOAK dolls’ world. So here he is, into and with dolls and music and related aesthetic codes. In this making of his persona, I guess he wants to be sthg one-of-a-kind.

“È tipo un bambolo” vien da dire osservando qsta immagine promozionale dal portfolio di nickis, e viene in mente per contrasto il famoso “He’s a doll” (= “è una bambola”) sulla scatola originale di Ken. Nickis è un cantante emergente molto versato anche nel mondo delle bambole OOAK. Così eccolo immerso e in compagnia delle bambole e della musica, coi relativi codici estetici. In qsta costruzione del suo personaggio vuol essere, diciamo, qlcuno di unico-nel-suo-genere.

A sensitive character from Chan Park’s (senti)mental world, Soo-ky also became a unique, entirely handmade doll in her box. Please, notice: a doll in her box, not a boxed doll! Because the box itself opens like a book and is decorated, lace-trimmed, quilted and embroidered … therefore true part of the doll’s fine paraphernalia including also the little bird representing her soul, a pair of laced boots, a little black dress, an umbrella and her bleeding heart. With this artefact, I have the impression that we go well over beyond the gift-set concept, far too commercial and serial. This is rather a metaphor of staying open to experiences, even if painful, and to love. So, keep that box open. Or contact Chan for more.

Sensibile personaggio nato dal mondo (senti)mentale di Chan Park, Soo-ky è diventata anche una bambola nella sua scatola, unica e interamente fatta a mano. NB: una bambola nella sua scatola, non una bambola in scatola! Perché la scatola stessa si apre a libro ed è decorata, orlata di pizzo, trapunta e ricamata… perciò fa veramente parte del minuto corredo della bambola, comprendente anche l’uccellino che ne rappresenta l’anima, un paio di stivaletti coi lacci, un tubino nero, un ombrello e il suo cuore sanguinante. Con qsto manufatto, la mia impressione è che andiamo ben oltre il concetto di gift-set, troppo commerciale e seriale. Qsta è più una metafora del rimanere aperti alle esperienze, anche dolorose, e all’amore. Allora, tenete la scatola aperta. O contattate Chan per saperne e volerne di più.

Ful(ah) of surprises

Fulah is a made-in-China version of Fulla, the Islamic response to Barbie. I was lucky enough to receive this doll as a gift yesterday. Chubbier than any other 1:6 fashion doll, made in hollow, light vinyl and modestly attired in a golden hemmed black chador, Fulah’s most interesting feature is actually IMHO the relationship between the real doll and her box, which deserves a description with notes. It’s a “Barbie pink” box with a graphic flowered interior. The box front reads the doll’s name fulah, all in small caps and using a nice, modern, Arabic looking font. The box window bears a round hole with a copy suggesting: “TRY ME! I will produce a sound with the light”. This should mean that you touch the doll’s belly (gh!) and she … doesn’t work. OK. In remembering she’s a fashion doll you notice, by the doll’s name, the claim “With Her Indoor Fashion”, where “Indoor” is the keyword. What you buy is in fact the doll in her correct outdoor outfit. Her indoor wardrobe is somehow pictured on the box back, where, to your surprise, you see 6 different outfits on a Barbiesque clone, which has nothing to do with your chubby and childish girl. So you have the impression that your doll will keep wearing her chador.

Fulah è una versione made in China di Fulla, la risposta islamica a Barbie. Ho avuto la fortuna di ricevere qsta bambola in regalo proprio ieri. Più cicciottina di qualsiasi altra fashion doll in scala 1:6, realizzata in vinile cavo e leggero e vestita con modestia in un chador nero con orli d’oro, Fulah ha come caratteristica più interessante il rapporto bambola/scatola – tanto da meritare una descrizione con note. Si tratta di una scatola color “Barbie pink” con l’interno grafico a fiori. Sul lato frontale c’è scritto fulah, in caratteri tutti minuscoli con lettere graziose, moderne, dal look arabeggiante. La finestra ha un buco rotondo con un testo che suggerisce: “TRY ME! I will produce a sound with the light”. (NdT “PROVAMI! Farò un suono con la luce”). Vorrebbe dire che bisogna toccare la pancia della bambola (gh!) e lei… non funziona. OK. Nel ricordarti che è una fashion doll, noti accanto al nome della bambola la frase “With Her Indoor Fashion” (NdT “con i suoi abiti da indossare al chiuso/in privato”), dove “Indoor” è la parola-chiave. Ciò che compri, infatti, è la bambola nel suo corretto abito per uscire. Il suo guardaroba privato è per così dire illustrato sul retro della scatola dove, con sorpresa, si scoprono raffigurati 6 differenti completi indossati da un clone Barbie-simile, che non ha niente a che fare con la tua bimba tondetta e infantile. Hai così l’impressione che la tua bambola si terrà il chador.

Shoeboxes? Showboxes!

Shoe boxes and doll boxes have much in common. Not only because their contents – respectively shoes and dolls - are more or less the same size, but also because both have a sort of fetish aura and potential. I’m not surprised, therefore, that a fine fashion maison as Lanvin has created these fashionable, limited edition porcelain statuette dolls curiously almost without a face, but with very detailed outfits and luxurious, mirror-decorated boudoir-boxes.

Scatole da scarpe e scatole di bambole hanno molto in comune. Non solo i loro contenuti – rispettivamente, scarpe e bambole – hanno dimensioni simili, ma anche perché hanno entrambe come un'aura e delle potenzialità fetish. Non mi sorprende quindi, che una sofisticata maison come Lanvin abbia creato qste bambole-statuette di porcellana fascinose e in edizione limitata, curiosamente quasi prive di volto, ma con abiti dettagliati e scatole lussuose, specchianti come boudoirs.
