Curvy & sweet (tooth)

My explorations around and about the body of the dolls continue. Curvy beauty is interestingly and interestedly coming back in the real world; so, you dolls, be prepared! And if Barbie has a few curves without being curvy, we notice that truly curvy and widely successful dolls don’t exist yet - Bambola is still too much a niche idol at the moment. In the meanwhile, I spotted these marzipan minidolls for those with the curvy obsession and a sweet tooth.

297 tamed stereotypes

Yes, another post on stereotypes! Barbieturici (i.e. a pun mixing Barbie + barbiturates) is an interesting Barbie art installation by Nicola Mette now exhibiting in Rome, at Museo della Civiltà Romana - and it’s all about stereotypes of identities and globalization. But not a multicultural globalization. I’d rather say a tamed one. Antonio Russo, Italian top doll collector and dollcultural person, who made this work possible by lending the artist 297 of his Barbies, told me he studied a number of additional stereotypes by dressing dolls to e.g. outline the typical gay or lesbian person, and immensely enjoyed collecting that wonderful kitsch icon made by the Dolls of the World – doll series which is the very version of the various ethnographic typologies as seen by an Hollywoodian B movies studio costume designer.

Critical viewer!

Barbie’s true tears on this ad promoting LeiTV, broadcasted by RCS, one of the major Italian publishing groups. The tagline reads “No woman will ever be the same”, meaning (let me interpret) that even Barbie the plastic queen, the hollow girl, would feel moved and engaged by the intelligent, smart, involving contents of this women’s TV channel. What LeiTV campaign actually does – knowingly, I hope - is therefore transforming Barbie in a judgmental reader, a savvy viewer, a symbol of the expected audience.

Thx, T!
