This is a detail from the rare Barbie Magico Peinado’s box seen by Nicole, doll collector friend, owner of a flickr gallery focused on the Barbie Superstar era, a beautiful and controversial one - as being a superstar is a controversial status itself. Barbie Superstar in fact shows up, and shows off all the paraphernalia a celebrity of the time is expected to: panoramic smile, diamond parure, boa, a segnaletic colour. She’s one close to being just famous for being famous. oh-oh: a forerunner?

Barbie Superstar infatti esordisce, ed esibisce tutti i paraphernalia che ci si aspetta da una celebrità del tempo: sorriso panoramico, parure di diamanti, boa, un colore segnaletico. È una pressoché famosa per il fatto di essere famosa. oh-oh: un'antesignana?

Dolls on books

Yes. Dolls on books (as for books on dolls, they will come in another moment). I’m delighted, as I was given the just issued “Giochi Sghiribizzi e Trastulli” and a couple of my Momoko dolls couldn’t resist to browsing it and choosing a lovely illustrated page, as you see below. This colorful book by Carlo Tacito Tonfoni is his second, extended, valuable collection of memories, rhymes, and rules about street/backyard play, toys made with nothing and play schemes which needed a vivid fantasy and real friends to play with. We’re talking about the years 1900-1955 - in Italy most of the pre-TV era - and it is a true field survey. I’ll talk again about the author, as he’s a volcanic, expert toys collector with a great penchant for involving both adults and kids in playful and cultural experiences.

Sì. Bambole sui libri (i libri sulle bambole verranno in un altro momento). Che delizia, mi è stato regalato “Giochi Sghiribizzi e Trastulli” appena uscito, e subito 2 mie Momoko non hanno resistito, si sono messe a sfogliarlo e hanno scelto una pagina delicatamente illustrata. Questo libro coloratissimo scritto da Carlo Tacito Tonfoni è la sua seconda e più ampia, preziosa raccolta di ricordi, rime, regole dei giochi fatti in strada/in cortile; di giocattoli fatti con niente e schemi di gioco che richiedevano una vivida fantasia e amici in carne ed ossa con cui giocare. Si parla degli anni 1900-1955 – grosso modo l’era pre-televisiva in Italia - ed è una vera e propria indagine sul campo. Dell’autore riparlerò, visto che è un vulcanico esperto e collezionista di giocattoli, con una grande gusto nel coinvolgere adulti e bambini in esperienze di gioco. E di cultura.

Doll rules VS Doll roles

In times when “religiously correct” dolls are issued, e.g. the Muslim Razanne and Fulla or the neo-evangelist Elsie, Laylie, Millie e Violet – all of them intended as anti-Barbie, considered too much assertive or bimbo – in these times, what an impression reading again a classical, “The Betrothed” by Alessandro Manzoni, and remembering how 400 yrs ago…

In tempi in cui nascono bambole “religiosamente corrette” come le musulmane Razanne e Fulla o le neo-evangeliche Elsie, Laylie, Millie e Violet – le une e le altre anti-Barbie, biasimata come donna troppo assertiva o oca giuliva – in questi tempi, che effetto fa rileggersi “I Promessi Sposi” e ricordare come 400 anni fa…
… La nostra infelice era ancor nascosta nel ventre della madre, che la sua condizione era già irrevocabilmente stabilita. Rimaneva soltanto da decidersi se sarebbe un monaco o una monaca; decisione per la quale faceva bisogno, non il suo consenso, ma la sua presenza. Quando venne alla luce, il principe suo padre, volendo darle un nome che risvegliasse immediatamente l'idea del chiostro, e che fosse stato portato da una santa d'alti natali, la chiamò Gertrude. Non plush ultra!

Upsy Daisy, a BBC TV character, lost its tone when transformed into a doll. The daisy-puppet was in fact black in TV, but very much whitish and paler in toy shops. A production accident, or a racist message? You cannot cheat kids, they want it back to black.

Upsy daisy, personaggio televisivo della BBC, ha perso un po’ di tono nel diventare una bambola. La margherita-pupazzo era infatti nera in TV, ma molto più bianchiccia e pallida nei negozi. Incidente di produzione o messaggio razzista? Mai fregare i bambini: loro la vogliono nera com’era.

A tiny transfert

A lovely New Year gift from my friend Dona. These handcrafted miniature dolls in their box are traditional from Guatemala. The leaflet you see literally reads: “GUATEMALAN WORRY DOLLS – According to legend. Guatemalan children tell one worry to each doll when they go to bed at night and place the dolls under their pillow. In the morning the dolls have taken their worries away.”

Un regalo per il Nuovo Anno, molto carino, dalla mia amica Dona. Queste bamboline fatte a mano nella loro scatolina sono tradizionali del Guatemala. Il foglietto che vedete recita, alla lettera: “BAMBOLINE GUATEMALTECHE DELLE PREOCCUPAZIONI – Secondo leggenda. I bambini guatemaltechi confidano una preoccupazione a ciascuna delle bamboline quando vanno a dormire la notte, e mettono le bamboline sotto il cuscino. Al mattino le bamboline hanno portato loro via le preoccupazioni.”
