Analytic anatomy

This is a cha-hakobi doll – a small automaton serving tea - in pieces though, kinda ready for an anatomy table, from the KARAKURI exhibition now on display in Turin. I don’t know why, more than by the all-dressed automaton dolls, I was moved by the naked parts, with their smooth wood essences, their elegant structure, their essential design, their gentle harmony. And we also are talking about antiquities, dating back to the Edo era (1603-1868), yet somehow anticipating the “friendly robot” philosophy in contemporary Japan.

Questa è una bambola cha-hakobi – un piccolo automa servitore di tè – in pezzi però come pronta per una tavola anatomica, dalla mostra KARAKURI attualmente visitabile a Torino. Non so perché, più che dalle bambole-automi interamente vestite, io sono stata toccata dalle nude parti, dalle loro essenze di legni levigati, dalla loro struttura elegante, dal design essenziale, dall’armonia gentile. E stiamo anche parlando di antichità, che risalgono al periodo Edo (1603-1868) eppure anticipatrici, in qualche modo, della filosofia del robot amichevole (“friendly robot”) del Giappone contemporaneo.

KARAKURI opening, Turin

Who’s behind the mask? A KARAKURI doll – an automaton. The wonderful Palazzo Barolo in the very heart of Turin is hosting a selected bunch of Japanese treasures. KARAKURI, this is the exhibit, features stunning antique mechanic dolls, a few miniatures of Matsuri carriages and a couple of contemporary robots. Chi c’è dietro la maschera? Una KARAKURI – una bambola-automa. Il meraviglioso Palazzo Barolo nel cuore del centro di Torino ospita un selezionato gruppo di tesori giapponesi. KARAKURI, questa la mostra, presenta sbalorditive bambole meccaniche antiche, alcune miniature di carri Matsuri e un paio di robot contemporanei. Torno presto con più commenti, volevo solo titillarvi, ora. Primo giorno domani, fino al 18 dicembre.

Other still lovers - La poupée automate

La poupée automate, i.e. the automaton doll, and we don’t know yet if it’s a sex doll – incredibly acted by an actress as a double – is starring in one of the most moving episodes of Federico Fellini’s Casanova. The now old Seducer dances with her, then wants to know how she is done, and inevitably possesses her in a powerful crescendo of solitude. Hence, are these dolls, as eternal still lovers, the last defeat for lonely people, are they an ultimate resource, or rather an useful dreadful illusion?

La poupée automate, ovvero la bambola meccanica, che ancora non sappiamo se sia una bambola erotica o no – incredibilmente animata da un’attrice come controfigura – è la protagonista di uno degli episodi più toccanti del Casanova di Fellini. L’ormai invecchiato Seduttore danza con lei e poi vuole sapere come è fatta e inevitabilmente la possiede, in un crescendo potente di solitudine. Da qui il pensiero se qste bambole, eterne mute amanti, siano per gente sola la definitiva sconfitta, l’ultima risorsa, o piuttosto un’utile raggelante illusione?

Shall we doll-dance?

A doll is never tired. Same thing, a robot. Combining the Asian paradigm of a dollyish, smooth beauty and a number of robotic performances on steel legs, Japan's Advanced Industrial Science and Technology created a beautiful dolliful robotiful robotdolldancer prototype named HRP-4C. Just don’t call her “Dancing Doll” if you don’t want to offend Barbie’s vintage outfit bearing the same name. Ages ago, it came with a mini record-player and fake vinyl records.


Una bambola non è mai stanca. Idem un robot. Combinando il paradigma asiatico di una bellezza bambolare e levigata con un buon numero di robotiche performance su gambe d’acciaio, la giapponese Japan's Advanced Industrial Science and Technology ha creato un bellissimo dollissimo robotissimo prototipo bambol-danzante chiamato HRP-4C. Basta non chiamarlo “Dancing Doll” per non offendere l’omonimo vestito vintage di Barbie, venduto col suo mini-giradischi e finti dischi di vinile.
