While I’m so vulnerable

A younger subject, holding dolls in his/her arms. Vulnerable in his/her less guarded pose. Unconcerned, or overconcened and yet unprotected re his/her future. This is the very transitory mood frozen in Dutch photographer Rineke Dijkstra’s image. Those dolls imply an open question about gender identity and  easy/hard life of this portrayed little person. It’s something melting.

Struggente.

MDNA + DOLLS = MDOLLS

It is with considerable kairòs* that Mario & Gianni, aka the dollartistic duo Magia2000, wanted their MDOLLS grand opening just one day before Madonna’s concert in Milan. Add a perfect location (Atelier ABC mannequins) and the surprise ingredient of an emerging fashion designer i.e. Florina Ivascu, with purposely crafted paper outfits. Back to the dolls, anyway: 20 Madonna dolls reproducing concert or video celebrated looks, and a stunning likeness in each repainting. So much credible were these portrait dolls, that a visitor didn’t know they used to be Mattel Barbie dolls (actually, he didn’t even know what entity Mattel is). Although I’m not a fan and in general I don’t follow celebrities, my enchantment goes all to this sumptuous Confession Tour Madonna in black (s. above). The event will close on June 27, still time to go!

* to the ancient Greeks, kairòs was the perfect/most timely moment for doing something

Strawberryjdolls, IDC surprise

Coming to it with guilty delay. The second Italian Doll Convention (friends say IDC) has been a success and a doll collector’s paradise, covering all possible kinds and eras of fashion dolls. But the most surprising new entry has been IMO a little series of handmade fragile BJDs called Strawberryjdolls and designed, crafted, painted and dressed by Veronica Menna, young doll artist with a fine arts background. Moulded in majolica or in resin, round head, stylized features finished with touches of paint, long and idol-like body with an unexpectedly curvy derrière, thin arms and legs, these dolls wear wigs and simple dresses in a vaguely 30s-40s mood. But their uniqueness is in being sexy without being suggestive. They have a future in seducing very discriminating collectors. And, I wonder, they must have a secret - or the secret is never revealing too much.

eni versalis, universalis

Why does a rebranding ad in the chemical industry seem dollcultural? Because of its "new face" concept. Because of the stuff used: all plastic pieces kinda making a mosaic. Because some of those pieces look like doll parts. And because of the seductive renaming: Polimerieuropa becomes eni versalis (and, ambitiously reading, sounds similar to “universalis”).

Contemporary idol(l)

This is the essence of collecting in a pop, extreme, desacrating interpretation: the Virgin Mary hybridized with a piece of My Little Ponies, meaning that the visual borders between different cults can be very subtle.

My MIA (Milan Image Art Fair) - II

This image by Angela Lo Priore - seen at MIA Fair and presented by Galleria Blanchaert - could steal its title from Patricia Cornwell’s “The body farm”. But it is not a factory where women are manufactured or recycled. Nor it’s a proper dummy or doll factory, despite the seriality of these bodies, faces, hairstyles and despite their anatomically retouched exterior kinda neutralising (or emphasizing? The same applies to many dolls, if you reflect) their sex appeal… This is a sort of onirical loft. And on a closer inspection, you’ll see these are real women. Seemingly identical, actually unique.

In apparenza identiche, uniche in realtà.
