Black & bright

As for today, the doll talk of the day was the sumptuous Black Barbie charity auction held by Mattel Italia and Vogue Italia with Christie’s to raise funds for the research against cancer. Right or not, I have the feeling that these events tend to be more appealing to the fashion or socialites community than to the doll collectors' - which might be deducible: who can afford those beauties, considering the high prices of certain lots and the visibility of the bidders? Isn’t there a lack of strategy somewhere? I’m glad to remember, nevertheless, that many of these dolls were styled or created by the Italian duo Magia2000.

Quanto ad oggi, l’argomento bambolare di cui tutti hanno parlato è stata l’asta benefica di sontuose Barbie nere tenuta da Mattel Italia e Vogue Italia con la casa d’aste Christie’s per raccogliere fondi a favore della ricerca contro il cancro. Giusto o no che sia, ho l’impressione che questi eventi tendano ad attrarre più la community della moda e dei presenzialisti piuttosto che i collezionisti di bambole nel loro insieme – il che potrebbe essere anche intuibile: chi può permettersi qlle bellezze, visti gli alti prezzi di certi lotti e la visibilità dei contendenti? Non c’è un buco nella strategia da qualche parte? Invece, sono contenta di ricordare che molte di qste bambole sono state curate nello styling o addirittura realizzate dal duo italiano Magia2000.

Netsuke on the Net

Netsuke is a Japanese word, and a beautiful object, heritage of the Edo period (1615-1868). It means the counterweight matching the purse worn over the masculine kimono - in absence of bags or pockets whatsoever. Wonderful netsukes are exhibited/treasured in many museums worldwide and I happened to see a number of them 2 days ago here in Milan at Museo Poldi Pezzoli. One of those, gently carved in ivory, is really emblematic. Look at it. It’s not a doll. It’s a so-called “woman of the doctor” used to avoid a direct contact when seeing a doctor, by locating and indicating the health problem ON THE DOLL, NOT ON THE WOMAN’S BODY.

Netsuke è una parola giapponese, e un magnifico oggetto, eredità del periodo Edo (1615-1868). Denota il contrappeso della saccoccia che si portava sopra il kimono maschile - in assenza di borse o tasche di qualsiasi tipo. Meravigliosi netsuke sono esibiti/custoditi in molti musei nel mondo e mi è capitato di vederne un bel po’ qui a Milano 2 gg fa, al Museo Poldi Pezzoli. Uno di essi, delicatamente scolpito in avorio, è davvero emblematico. Guardatelo. Non è mica una bambola. È una cosiddetta “donna-del-dottore”, usata durante le visite mediche per evitare il contatto diretto, indicando il problema di salute SULLA BAMBOLA, NON SUL CORPO DELLA DONNA.
