(Dis)sacred doll

A S. Sebastian-themed contemporary art group exhibition is now on in Milan. Somehow, but not unexpectedly, S. Sebastian belongs to both sacred art e gay imagery, maybe due to the iconography depicting him as a strong, half-naked, wounded, suffering and ecstatic man. I happened to write an intro to Chan Park’s interpretation of this icon. I’m very conscious that it may provoke someone’s criticism because of the treatment of such subject. But I do register it as another relevant incursion of dolls in art. Here’s my text:

“Between ecstasy and torment – more ecstasy, would seem - ,
A powerful, silent, haloed, tatooed S. Sebastian.
All the motifs, colours, sacred art details
and the iconography of the pierced martyr,
here they are on the tough body of an action figure
showing it all summarized on his own skin:
but he’s not a statue, he can move.
Chan Park, half Japanese-half Corean visual artist now in Milan,
started from a poseable male doll to build
millimeter by millimeter a persona who is
filled with symbolic, erotic, mysterious pics.”

Una mostra collettiva di arte contemporanea sul tema S. Sebastiano è ora in corso a Milano. In qualche modo, ma non inaspettatamente, S. Sebastiano appartiene sia all’arte sacra sia all’immaginario gay, magari a causa dell’iconografia che lo ha sempre descritto come un uomo forte, seminudo, ferito, sofferente ed estatico. Mi è capitato di scrivere una intro all’interpretazione che di qsta icona ha fatto Chan Park. So che potrebbe provocare critiche da parte di qualcuno per il trattamento di un simile soggetto. Ma io la registro come un’ulteriore rilevante incursione delle bambole nell’arte. Ecco il mio testo:

“Tra estasi e tormento - più estasi, sembrerebbe -
un San Sebastiano possente, silente, aureolato, tatuato.
I motivi, i colori e i dettagli dell’arte sacra
e l’iconografia del martire trafitto da frecce,
eccoli sul corpo tosto di un’action figure maschile
che porta tutto in sintesi sulla propria pelle:
ma non è una statuina, si può muovere.
Chan Park, artista visuale nippo-coreano ora a Milano,
è partito da un bambolotto articolato per costruire
millimetro dopo millimetro un personaggio
ricoperto di figure simboliche, erotiche e misteriose.”

Stay Open!

A sensitive character from Chan Park’s (senti)mental world, Soo-ky also became a unique, entirely handmade doll in her box. Please, notice: a doll in her box, not a boxed doll! Because the box itself opens like a book and is decorated, lace-trimmed, quilted and embroidered … therefore true part of the doll’s fine paraphernalia including also the little bird representing her soul, a pair of laced boots, a little black dress, an umbrella and her bleeding heart. With this artefact, I have the impression that we go well over beyond the gift-set concept, far too commercial and serial. This is rather a metaphor of staying open to experiences, even if painful, and to love. So, keep that box open. Or contact Chan for more.

Sensibile personaggio nato dal mondo (senti)mentale di Chan Park, Soo-ky è diventata anche una bambola nella sua scatola, unica e interamente fatta a mano. NB: una bambola nella sua scatola, non una bambola in scatola! Perché la scatola stessa si apre a libro ed è decorata, orlata di pizzo, trapunta e ricamata… perciò fa veramente parte del minuto corredo della bambola, comprendente anche l’uccellino che ne rappresenta l’anima, un paio di stivaletti coi lacci, un tubino nero, un ombrello e il suo cuore sanguinante. Con qsto manufatto, la mia impressione è che andiamo ben oltre il concetto di gift-set, troppo commerciale e seriale. Qsta è più una metafora del rimanere aperti alle esperienze, anche dolorose, e all’amore. Allora, tenete la scatola aperta. O contattate Chan per saperne e volerne di più.

miSPLICEing

Don’t know very much about the movie SPLICE, a 2009 sci-fi plot with generations of semi-human GMO creatures seeing the light in this world. However, I happened to view some images of such creatures: it’s the always irresistible tòpos of the extent where deformity, humanity, tenderness, evil and vulnerability make a misplacing mix. I had the impression they were strange figurines or mutant dolls. Soon I discovered that someone is already OOAK-making such dolls!



Non so molto del film SPLICE, una storia fantascientifica del 2009 con generazioni di creature OGM semi-umane che vedono la luce in qsto mondo. Però mi è capitato di vedere alcune immagini di tali creature: è il sempre irresistibile tòpos del limite verso cui deformità, umanità, tenerezza, male e vulnerabilità convergono in un mix spiazzante. Ho avuto l’impressione come di strane figurine o bambole mutanti. Presto ho scoperto che qualcuno sta già OOAK-realizzando bambole del genere!

Flirting with the myth

This is Chan Park’s hand holding and showing us one of his most recent repaints. It takes a special gift to obtain such a lifelike look and flirting glance in a male doll. The mythical idea of creating something, oh no, someone alive and unique and with an erotic power is involved in this makeover process. I think this theme deserves further study: the myth downscaled to handy dimensions – in other words, God-playing.

Qsta qui è la mano di Chan Park che tiene e ci mostra uno dei suoi repaints più recenti. Ci vuole un dono fuori dall’ordinario per ottenere un aspetto così vero e uno sguardo così seducente in una bambola maschile. L’idea mitica di creare qualcosa, oh no, qualcuno di vivo e unico e provvisto di potere erotico è connessa a qsto processo realizzativo. Credo che qsto tema meriti ulteriore studio: il mito ridimensionato ad una scala maneggevole – il giocare alla Creazione.

Sexy bambolotto

Repainted to look real. Chan Park’s work obeys to gay aesthetics with a definitely superior artwork quality. Would you say this guy is an action figure? You would rather say this is an adored slave to love, someone to look after jealously - or the doll-scaled version of a very personal dream, somehow evocative of Pigmalion’s myth! However, in Chan’s words, he’s just a sexy bambolotto (sexy male doll).

Ridipinto da sembrare reale. I lavori di Chan Park si rifanno all’estetica gay con una qualità artistica decisamente superiore. Si direbbe che qsto tipo è un’action figure? Si direbbe piuttosto che è un adorato schiavo d’amore, qualcuno da curare gelosamente – o la versione in scala bambolare di un sogno molto personale, quasi ad evocare il mito di Pigmalione! Nelle parole di Chan, è soltanto un bambolotto sexy.

Learn this new name: Soo-ky. This poetic creature comes from Chan Park’s, a Nippo-Korean Milan based artist, imaginary world. She, i.e. Soo-Ky, has no arms and cannot embrace other creatures, but she’s got a friend, a little bird, dearest to her heart - maybe it’s her heart. Or maybe both Soo-Ky and the little bird are alter-ego emanations of the artist… soon exhibiting in Turin and in Milan. What does this all in all have to do with dolls? Well, Soo-Ky might become a doll.

Un nuovo nome da imparare: Soo-Ky. Questa poetica creatura viene dall’immaginario di Chan Park, artista nippo-coreano di Milano. Lei, Soo-ky, non ha braccia e non può abbracciare altre creature, ma ha un amico, un uccellino, caro al suo cuore – che magari è il suo cuore stesso. O forse entrambi Soo-Ky e l’uccellino sono emanazioni, alter-ego dell’artista… presto in mostra a Torino e a Milano. Sì, ma cosa c’entra tutto qsto con le bambole? Beh, c’entra che Soo-Ky potrebbe diventarlo, una bambola.

Tattoo, too

Gene used to be a cinema diva in her doll concept and a doll fad in the late 90s - quite faded concept right now, maybe cannibalized by BJDs and other bolder dolls. But Chan Park, doll and tattoo artist and a nippo-korean in Milan, gave her a new allure exasperating the contrast between her garçonne face and an intricated motif all over her body.

Gene era una diva del cinema come doll concept, e una vera mania bambolare nei tardi anni '90 - doll concept alquanto sbiadito ora, magari cannibalizzato dalle BJD e da altre bambole più toste. Ma Chan Park, artista di bambole e tatuaggi nippo-coreano a Milano, le ha dato un'allure nuova esasperando il contrasto tra la faccina à la garçonne e un intricato disegno che le copre tutto il corpo.

Doll transit(ion)s

To the expert’s eye, many allegedly hyperfemale fashion dolls (the fad of the moment) have a real transgender penchant. No names, I’m not talking about them here, just sampling an associative chain. It will start from a self-celebrating Barbie in fashion sketches patchwork gown and continue with the inverse look, i.e. a transgender dancer with a 3D-Barbie decorated dress; then a proudly transgender doll and a sumptuous Patrick Swayze “en travesti” OOAK doll by collector friend Chan Park.

All’occhio dell’esperto, molte delle presunte fashion doll iperfemminili (che vanno tantissimo al momento) hanno un autentico penchant transgender. Non le nomino, né parlo di loro qui, ma piuttosto sciorino una catena associativa di immagini. Inizia da una Barbie auto-celebrante in abito patchwork a figurini per continuare con il look inverso, cioè una ballerina trans decorata con Barbie in 3D; poi una bambola dichiaratamente transgender e un sontuoso Patrick Swayze “en travesti” opera OOAK dell’amico e collezionista Chan Park.
