Persona, impersonal, or person? In front of contemporary Chinese artist Chen Ke’s self-portrait, wearing a mask - would seem a doll mask - I found myself intrigued. Why? Because I get captured by her ambiguous fleeting among a) the maximum of characterization, i.e. being a “persona” (Latin word meaning also “mask”!), b) trying to appear totally impersonal and disguised and to some extent as serial as a doll, or c) at last simply being a person, i.e. an individual with a little life and a little time and a little space at all, and a “cerebrum” - in other words, a brain.

Personaggio, impersonale, o persona? Davanti all’autoritratto dell’artista cinese contemporanea Chen Ke, con addosso una maschera – sembrerebbe una maschera da bambola – mi sono trovata intrigata. Il motivo è il suo ambiguo fluttuare tra a) il massimo di caratterizzazione, cioè essere un personaggio (NB però che in latino “persona” significa anche “maschera”!) e b) tentare di apparire totalmente impersonale e mascherata e al limite seriale come può esserlo una bambola, oppure c) essere una persona e basta, cioè un individuo con una sua piccola vita, un suo piccolo tempo, un suo spazietto e un suo “cerebrum” – in altre parole, un cervello.
