Precarious collecting

From the very first time, his works upset me. Mark Ryden, first only blankanvas to me, has the power to dig up monsters from one’s inconscious, and present them under the pastel-coloured appearance of something hagiographic or ex-voto-like. So he easily paints little girls, little pets, toys and all lovely things horribly endangered, or already obeying a sad destiny. This one you see (found by moviem@tica) also features a #1 Barbie. Its title is “Swap Meet Man” and seems allusive to all sorts of collecting.

Fin dalla primissima volta, i suoi lavori mi hanno sconvolta. Mark Ryden, per me in origine solo blankanvas, ha come il potere di estrarre mostri dal nostro inconscio e di presentarli sotto le pastellose spoglie di qualcosa di agiografico, che sa di ex-voto. Facilmente raffigura bambine, animaletti, giocattoli e tutte cose carine in preda ad orribili pericoli, o già obbedienti ad un triste destino. Questo che vedete, trovatomi da moviem@tica, contiene anche una Barbie #1. Si intitola “Swap Meet Man” (uomo degli incontri per fare scambi) e sembra alludere a tutti i collezionismi.
