Morton Bartlett’s (just) dolls

Morton Bartlett (USA, 1909-1992) made dolls. 15 dolls. Dolls? Maybe more dummies, or statues with some articulation. Half-scaled, pre-teenage, mostly female, precisely sculpted in plaster then painted and completed with wigs, dressed and photographed by the self-taught author, they still make a sort of disquieting unicum in vintage mood, IMHO alluding to the weak borders between an innocent and a morbid interest. Now exhibited in Turin under The Museum of Everything concept.

Morton Bartlett (USA, 1909-1992) fece bambole. 15 bambole. Bambole? Forse più manichini, o statue con qualche articolazione. In scala 1:2, pre-adolescenti, femmine perlopiù, scolpite con precisione in gesso e poi dipinte e completate con parrucche, vestite e fotografate dall’autore autodidatta, sono un unicum spiazzante dal mood vintage. Secondo me alludono in modo delicato al labile confine tra un interesse innocente e uno morboso. E sono ora e fino al prossimo 29 agosto esposte a Torino alla Pinacoteca Agnelli sotto il concept The Museum of Everything.

Topos of Innocence

Innocent who? A) The young actress Emma Watson in her 18 (is she cloning Keira Knightley, BTW…)? B) The rather disquieting and not-at-all original biscuit doll she holds? C) You, the observer? We are all too knowing by now. Yes, the doll, too.
