Introducing the iDoll?

According to Apple grammar rules, this might be the iDoll or maybe the iCon. But this is not from Cupertino. What you see is a 12” figure (like Ken) in an almost perfect, impressively credible likeness of Steve Jobs, produced and marketed by in icons, who launched the doll encouraging pre-orders. Homage or plagiarism? The copy features highlights from the already famous Stanford speech, the one with the mantra “Stay hungry. Stay foolish.” What should this vinyl Steve Jobs be? The contemporary Lar** in the geek’s house? A prophet in black turtleneck, since the prophetic look has been really emphasized? The immediate dollification of an icon, before he’s de-iconized? Who will buy him? By the moment I’m posting, the first stock is sold out.


Stando alle regole grammaticali Apple, qsta potrebbe essere la iDoll o magari la iCon. Ma non viene da Cupertino. Qlla che vedete è una figura alta 12” (come Ken, diciamo) con le sembianze praticamente perfette di Steve Jobs, credibili in modo impressionante, prodotta e commercializzata da in icons, che è partita con il lancio incoraggiando i preordini. Omaggio o plagio? Il testo presenta frammenti dell’ormai famoso discorso di Stanford, quello con il mantra: “Stay hungry. Stay foolish.” E cosa dovrebbe essere qsto Steve Jobs vinilico: il Lare contemporaneo nella casa dello smanettone? Un profeta in dolcevita nero, vista l’enfasi data al look profetico? L’immediata bambolizzazione di un’icona, prima che la de-iconizzino? Chi lo comprerà? Nel momento in cui scrivo, il primo lotto è andato esaurito.

Born a woman

Too expressive for being a doll. Too vintage-looking for being really vintage. Too fine for appearing so familiar. Too much American-Girl-like for ignoring “American Girl Barbie” and her sophisticated physionomy (s. example here in the middle of the text). These were my impressions after seeing Seiko Ohmori’s 3D wonderful polymer clay figures and learning they are approx life-size. What if they were fashion dolls? 1:6 scale women with a superior ironical twist. Natural born women.

Troppo espressiva per essere una bambola. Troppo con l’aria vintage per essere vintage vera. Troppo fine per sembrare così familiare. Troppo American Girl per ignorare “Barbie American Girl” e la sua sofisticata fisionomia (v. un bellissimo es. qui nel mezzo del testo). Queste le mie impressioni dopo aver visto le magnifiche figure tridimensionali in pasta sintetica di Seiko Ohmori e aver capito che sono praticamente a grandezza naturale. E se fossero invece fashion dolls? Donne in scala 1:6 con un quid di superiore ironia. Donne nate.

The old “don’t accept candies from a stranger” advice is here revisited, featuring a bunch of American icons and assorted commonplaces, plus a role inversion. Actors are playing it well nevertheless!
