Mouth Open, Teeth Showing

The title of this post is the very title of this oneiric and maybe threatening 162 dolls installation seen by my blogger friend Moviem@tica in Copenhagen last year. What is remarkable to me is that “Mouth Open, Teeth Showing” are typical doll features, considered important in doll identification, description and evaluation; but at the same time they do evoke the body language of aggressivity. I don’t know whether the author, the US artist Zoe Leonard, did intentionally use those terms. But the regular pattern of this installation - like an army I’d say-, its visibility from the distance, and the invitation to walk amidst the dolls (very few visitors did actually perform that), all this made a somehow misplacing and disquieting effect.

Il titolo del post è proprio il vero titolo di questa onirica e fors’anche minacciosa installazione di 162 bambole vista dalla mia amica blogger Moviem@tica a Copenhagen l’anno scorso. Quel che per me colpisce, è che “Mouth Open, Teeth Showing” (N.d.T = bocca aperta, mostra i denti) sono tipici tratti bambolosi, considerati anzi importanti per identificare, descrivere, valutare una bambola; ma al tempo stesso questi tratti evocano il linguaggio non-verbale dell’aggressività. Io non so se l’autrice, l’artista americana Zoe Leonard, abbia usato tutto ciò intenzionalmente. Ma la disposizione regolare di questa installazione – direi come un esercito schierato, la sua visibilità a distanza, e l’invito a camminare pure liberamente in mezzo alle bambole (pochissimi visitatori davvero l’hanno fatto), tutto questo faceva un effetto spiazzante, inquietante.
