My MIA (Milan Image art Fair) - I

For the second time I visited MIA Fair, and I could go to the opening. Although not all is pure photography, there (I mean also installations and mixed media works are exhibited, and thematic books are a true feast), I had my dollcultural expectations to be fulfilled. And they did. I already knew Gabriele Corni’s series ADOPERABILI, at MIA curated by Galleria OltreDimore. “The dolls are reflections of our own needs” is the artist’s statement. But seen in real scale, these hyperreal images hypnotize the observer with their whiteness and their features. Every knows that dolls don’t have true genitalia (not even when they aare anatomically correct and accessorized sex dolls) and Corni’s dolls seemingly don’t as well. They are perfect and perturbing. The are dolls and objects and subjects.

Per la seconda volta ho visitato MIA Fair, andando all’inaugurazione. Benché non tutto lì dentro sia pura fotografia (i.e. anche istallazioni e opere in materiali misti sono esposti, e poi ci sono i libri tematici che sono una festa), avevo le mie attese dollculturali da soddisfare. Così è stato. Conoscevo già la serie ADOPERABILI di Gabriele Corni, al MIA curata dalla Galleria OltreDimore. “La bambole sono l’immagine riflessa delle esigenze di chi sta dall’altra parte”, afferma l’artista. Ma viste dal vero, queste immagini iperreali ipnotizzano l’osservatore col loro candore e i loro tratti. Le bambole, si sa, non possiedono veri genitali (neanche quando sono sex dolls anatomically correct and super-accessoriate) e a quanto sembra nemmeno le bambole di Gabriele Corni. Sono perfette e perturbanti. Sono bambole e oggetti e soggetti.

Available VS disposable

For doll lovers or foot fetishists: clean up your ears graciously with this Japanese doll's pointy feet. The naked and sexy dolls, dating back to the 70s, come in a couple like our ears. However, what impresses me most of all here, is the change in our habits and in the concept of hygiene: we are comparing an artistic and always available vintage earpick for repeated use VS our disposable contemporary cotton fioc. This available VS disposable issue recalls me the precious toothpick pendant noticed in an Renaissance painting by Lorenzo Lotto (portrait of Lucina Brembati). Such personal accessories were as rare as jewels, an excuse for showing-off and a sign of exquisite politeness and savoir-vivre.


Per amanti delle bambole e feticisti del piede: pulitevi le orecchie graziosamente con i piedini appuntiti di qsta bambola giapponese. Le bamboline nude e sexy, databili agli anni ’70, sono una coppia come le nostre orecchie. Ciò che qui più mi impressiona è però il cambiamento nelle ns abitudini e nel concetto di igiene: stiamo confrontando un artistico nettaorecchie vintage, disponibile per utilizzi ripetuti VS il nostro cotton fioc contemporaneo usa-e-getta. Qsta faccenda del disponibile VS usa-e-getta mi ha ricordato il ciondolo stuzzicadenti visto in un dipinto rinascimentale, di Lorenzo Lotto (ritratto di Lucina Brembati). Accessori personali come qllo erano rari come gioielli, pretesto di ostentazione e segno di squisita educazione e savoir-vivre.

Megadoll

Sitting astride a bridge where a train is darting, somewhere in Japan. Temporary installation? Gigantic magnificent obsession? You’ll agree that the idea of a megadoll girl with a train between her legs (and of course in the usual manga character student uniform) is quite asking for reflections.


Seduta a cavalcioni su un ponte dove sfreccia un treno, da qualche parte in Giappone. Installazione temporanea? Gigantesca magnifica ossessione? Converrete che l’idea di una ragazzina megabambola con un treno tra le gambe (e ovviamente nella solita uniforme da studentessa da personaggio manga) richiede riflessioni.

Shall we doll-dance?

A doll is never tired. Same thing, a robot. Combining the Asian paradigm of a dollyish, smooth beauty and a number of robotic performances on steel legs, Japan's Advanced Industrial Science and Technology created a beautiful dolliful robotiful robotdolldancer prototype named HRP-4C. Just don’t call her “Dancing Doll” if you don’t want to offend Barbie’s vintage outfit bearing the same name. Ages ago, it came with a mini record-player and fake vinyl records.


Una bambola non è mai stanca. Idem un robot. Combinando il paradigma asiatico di una bellezza bambolare e levigata con un buon numero di robotiche performance su gambe d’acciaio, la giapponese Japan's Advanced Industrial Science and Technology ha creato un bellissimo dollissimo robotissimo prototipo bambol-danzante chiamato HRP-4C. Basta non chiamarlo “Dancing Doll” per non offendere l’omonimo vestito vintage di Barbie, venduto col suo mini-giradischi e finti dischi di vinile.

Say NINGYŌ, you’ll evoke dolls

Evocative, impressive, introspective. NINGYŌ is the first act of a thematic exhibition in Turin, and it’s all about traditional Japanese dolls. This is the occasion for you to be face-to-face with those imperturbable, fine dolls – something among toy, statuette, porte-bonheur, souvenir, idol, inheritance. They preceed all current Asian cult BJDs and fashion dolls like Momoko; such contemporary dolls, so much sought after by collectors, owe to these originals their feeling of mystery and kindness, their formal perfection as well.

NINGYŌ – Bambole dal Giappone (i.e. “Dolls from Japan) features unique dolls. You’ll meet - and learn about - NŌ NINGYŌ recalling theatre actors; KOKESHI simple wooden cylindrical gift-dolls; KIMEKOMI, dressed and painted often holding tiny toys; HAKATA - dolls or statuettes?; GOSHŌ, merry and rounded, and ISHŌ, ultradetailed, hieratic and fashionable costume dolls; HINA NINGYŌ, the ritual dolls protagonists of HINA MATSURI – girls’ DAY.

3 suggestions for the visitor: 1) pls view the video showing the making of a doll. You’ll understand the essence of a NINGYŌ (“NING” = man and “GYŌ” = “shape” in Japanese). I was astonished when seeing how eyes are carved our from the doll’s blank face.
2) Once you have toured the exhibition, tour it again to capture more beauty in more detail, including the beauty of the noble palace Barolo of the very Turin, hosting the exhibition
3) Browse and buy the catalog. It’s a wonderful edition by cultural association Yoshin Ryu, inventor and designer of this event: you’ll enjoy fantastic pics and an enriching, deep, bilingual ITA/ENG text.

Evocativa, impressionante, introspettiva. NINGYŌ è il primo atto di una mostra tematica a Torino, tutta dedicata alle bambole giapponesi della tradizione. È l’occasione per trovarsi di fronte ad imperturbabili finissime bambole – oggetti la cui natura comprende giocattolo, statuina, portafortuna, souvenir, idolo, eredità. Queste precedono tutte le attuali asiatiche di culto come le BJD o fashion dolls tipo Momoko; tali bambole contemporanee, così ricercate dai collezionisti, devono a qste bambole originali il loro senso di mistero e di gentilezza, e altresì la loro perfezione formale.

NINGYŌ – Bambole dal Giappone, presenta bambole uniche. 3 suggerimenti per il visitatore:
1) Guardare il video iniziale che mostra come si fa una bambola, per capire l’essenza di una NINGYŌ (“NING” = “uomo” e “GYŌ” = “forma” in giapponese). Io sono rimasta basita vedendo intagliare gli occhi dalla faccia bianca.
2) Una volta fatto il giro della mostra, rifarlo – per catturare più bellezza in maggiore dettaglio, compresa qlla del nobile palazzo Barolo dell’autentica Torino, sede della mostra
3) Sfogliare e comprare il catalogo. È un’edizione stupenda curata da Yoshin Ryu, realtà culturale che ha progettato l’evento: fantastiche immagini e testi colti, ricchi e bilingui in italiano e in inglese.
