Carne plastica

i.e. "plastic flesh". I truly wanted to write a post bearing this title, thus nurturing one of my most beloved topics, the body of the dolls. What you see here in Lizretros © pics, is a Lilli doll clone - the cheapest ever, probably. But so low quality and hollow and badly painted and poorly imitating the original is this doll’s plastic flesh, that it ends up with becoming a sublime piece of kitsch. May this remind me that there is not ONE beauty and that imitation is a way of paying homage to somehow luckier models, yet allowing room to other unexpected evolutions.

“Carne plastica”. Volevo davvero scrivere un post con qsto titolo, alimentando così uno dei miei temi più amati, il corpo delle dolls. Quel che si vede qui nelle foto di Lizretros ©, è un clone della bambola Lilli – il più scadente che si sia mai visto, probabilmente. Ma la carne plastica di qsta bambola è tanto di bassa qualità e vuota e mal pitturata e mal imitante l’originale, che finisce col diventare un sublime pezzo di kitsch. Serva qsto a ricordarmi che non esiste UNA SOLA bellezza e che l’imitazione è un modo di rendere omaggio a modelli in qlche modo più fortunati, lasciando pure spazio ad altre evoluzioni inattese.

Twin Clones in the Playroom

Do you know those promocards about events in your city? This is presenting a theatre pièce  - produced by Teatro delle Moire in Milan - about being kids and being adults. The Playroom, after which the pièce is named, is also the symbolic space where identity evolution takes place. However, this is not the point. What actually impressed me, is the use of these unusual Skipper doll twin clones as personae to promote the show. Double and identical, fake and contradictory - just like life.

Sapete qlle promocard sugli eventi nella vostra città? Qsta qui presenta una pièce teatrale - prodotta dal Teatro delle Moire a Milano - sull'essere bambini e sull'essere adulti. Playroom (la stanza dei giochi che dà il nome alla pièce) è anche lo spazio simbolico in cui avviene l'evoluzione dell'identità. Ma non è qsto il punto. Ciò che in realtà mi ha fatto impressione è l'uso di qsti cloni gemelli tipo Skipper come personae per promuovere lo spettacolo. Doppie e identiche, false e in contraddizione - proprio come la vita.

Lilli or clone, repainted or original, these arched and booted feet are quite a bold example of how Lilli (and her Hong Kong sisters) weren’t too much a toy for little girls.

Suitable scales

S, M, L, or better a downscale to XS, S, M? Sizes don’t count here. These wonderful 50/60s-flavoured images by Shillmans on flickr (pls view his album) capture the multidimensional elegance of vintage dolls, regardless if fake or clones or rétro. No one of these is bigger than 1:6 scale, and yet their composed allure and look can teach something to the contemporary real girls: being polite, being assertive.

S, M, L, o meglio magari scalare a XS, S, M? Non contano le taglie, qui. Qste stupende immagini dall’aria anni 50/60 create da Shillmans su flickr (guardate il suo album) colgono l’eleganza multidimensionale delle bambole vintage, senza badare che siano false o cloni o rétro. Nessuna di esse supera la scala 1:6, eppure il loro portamento e il look composto possono insegnare qlcosa alle ragazze reali contemporanee: essere educate, essere assertive.

Darlene + doll

I’m hesitant about the meaning of these pictures of a girl and her doll in Nicaragua. Too easily, it would be a way to just confront with, and speak against poverty. Interestingly, it would rather be an excuse to document the diffusion of an hollow and dominant physical model, a blonde-long legs-overnational one. Or a visual device to distract the observer from something else happening in the background? Who knows. Keep smiling, Darlene.

Indecisa sul significato di qste immagini di una bambina e la sua bambola in Nicaragua. Troppo facile sarebbe prenderle solo come un modo di affrontare il tema della povertà e parlarne contro. Più interessante, sarebbe magari vederle come una scusa per documentare la diffusione di un modello fisico vuoto e dominante bionda-gambelunghe-sovranazionale. O invece uno stratagemma visuale per distrarre l’osservatore da qualcos’altro che accade sullo sfondo? Chissà. Continua a sorridere, Darlene.
