Strawberryjdolls, IDC surprise

Coming to it with guilty delay. The second Italian Doll Convention (friends say IDC) has been a success and a doll collector’s paradise, covering all possible kinds and eras of fashion dolls. But the most surprising new entry has been IMO a little series of handmade fragile BJDs called Strawberryjdolls and designed, crafted, painted and dressed by Veronica Menna, young doll artist with a fine arts background. Moulded in majolica or in resin, round head, stylized features finished with touches of paint, long and idol-like body with an unexpectedly curvy derrière, thin arms and legs, these dolls wear wigs and simple dresses in a vaguely 30s-40s mood. But their uniqueness is in being sexy without being suggestive. They have a future in seducing very discriminating collectors. And, I wonder, they must have a secret - or the secret is never revealing too much.

Ci arrivo con colpevole ritardo. La seconda Italian Doll Convention (per gli amici, IDC) è stata un successo e un paradiso del doll collector, che copriva tutti i generi e le epoche di fashion dolls. Ma la new entry secondo me più sorprendente è stata una piccola serie di fragili BJD fatte a mano chiamate Strawberryjdolls progettate, realizzate, dipinte e vestite da Veronica Menna, giovane dol artist con formazione di Belle Arti. Modellate in maiolica o in resina, teste rotonde, tratti stilizzati rifiniti da tocchi di colore, corpo allungato da idoletto con un inaspettato derrière pienotto, braccia e gambe sottili, queste bambole indossano parrucche e vestiti semplici vagamente anni ’30-40. Ma la loro unicità sta nell’essere sexy senza essere sfacciate. Hanno un futuro nel sedurre collezionisti molto esigenti. E, mi chiedo, devono avere un segreto - o il segreto è mai rivelare troppo.

Innocent sleep?

A fairy figurine sleeps in a shoe. A sexy dolly dreams lovely dreams in a heeled pump. A clay pornostar experiences x-rated fantasies in a fetish vintage pump. Any interpretation is possible, as it’s just a reflection of what you, the observer, are. Honi soit qui mal y pense.


Una figurina di fatina dorme in una scarpina. Una bambolina sexy fa sogni romantici in una scarpetta coi tacchi. Una pornostar di resina vive fantasie proibite in una décolleté vintage. Ogni interpretazione è possibile, in quanto riflesso di ciò che sei tu, osservatore. Honi soit qui mal y pense.

A mail order life

Photographer and filmmaker Laurie Simmons is not new to me, due to her artistic research involving dolls, dummies, and similar simulacra. The love doll creative theme is not new to me as well - it’s just very contemporary and very sensitive. Simmons mail ordered a love doll (and this is an euphemism) from Japan and then documented 30 days of their life together – from the very first coming out of the box to becoming friends, getting dressed, taking a bath, sleeping or laying lazily in bed, exploring the house, going out, swimming … What is interesting here is a kind of de-eroticization of the love doll. I mean, she’s not pictured as a sexual object - although her silicon body speaks. All the operation is a giant and gentle euphemism, and I feel it’s captivating.

La fotografa e cineasta Laurie Simmons non mi è nuova, grazie alla sua ricerca artistica che si serve di bambole, manichini, e simili simulacri. E neanche il tema creativo della bambola erotica mi è nuovo – è semplicemente molto attuale e molto sensibile. La Simmons, dunque, ha ordinato per posta una bambola erotica giapponese (love doll è un eufemismo) e ha quindi documentato 30 giorni di convivenza con lei – da quando è per la prima volta uscita dalla scatola al diventare amiche, vestirsi, fare un bagno, dormire o poltrire nel letto, esplorare la casa, uscire, nuotare… quel che è interessante è che c’è come una specie di de-eroticizzazione della bambola erotica. Voglio dire, non è raffigurata come un oggetto sessuale – benché parli per lei il suo corpo di silicone. Tutta l’operazione è un gigantesco e gentile eufemismo, che trovo catturante.

ba-ba-Bambaland

I’m probably too much copywriter-minded, but I am what I am, so product naming sometimes attracts me more than the product in se. Bambaland is actually (I'm editing my first text) the name of an online store where you were supposed to find this item - more a figurine than a doll, and obeying to all those mangastic criteria of sexy appearance. But sentimentally and perceptively “bàmbala” seems the babyish deformed pronounciation of “bàmbola”, i.e. doll in Italian. And I like this contrast.

Ho probabilmente troppo la mentalità da copywriter, ma sono qllo che sono, e così il nome del prodotto a volte mi attrae più del prodotto in sé. Bambaland è in realtà (correggo il mio primo testo) l'online store dove teoricamente si trattava qst'oggetto - più una figurina che una bambola, obbediente a tutti i criteri mangastici dell’apparire sexy. Ma sentimentalmente e percettivamente, “bàmbala” è la pronuncia deformata da un bambino piccolo della parola “bambola”. E questo contrasto mi piace.
