Gloomy snowglobes

Despite its fame as a kitsch object, a snowglobe (boule à neige, if you prefer) can stage interesting images. These, almost all with a gloomy, ghostly twist, are from the work of Walter Martin and Paloma Muñoz. The snowy wonderland is there converted in the scene of a crime, or in a somehow incongruous landscape, where miniature characters (those model-making human beings) in summer clothing live their miniature lives among the miniature accidents, miniature solitudes, miniature absurdities you giant outside contemplate.

A dispetto della fama di oggetto kitsch, la palla di neve (boule à neige, se preferite) può inscenare immagini interessanti. Qste, quasi tutte con un’intonazione cupa, fantasmatica, fanno parte del lavoro di Walter Martin and Paloma Muñoz. E così il magico mondo innevato si converte nella scena di un crimine, o in un paesaggio in qlche maniera incongruo, dove personaggi in miniatura (quei piccoli esserini usati nel modellismo) in abiti estivi vivono le loro vite in minatura tra gli incidenti in miniatura, le solitudini in miniatura, le assurdità in miniatura che voi giganti là fuori contemplate.

Tempus fugit

i.e. “Time flies” – bear in mind this. I visited last week Giovanni Gastel’s latest photo exhibition titiled “Maschere e Spettri” (i.e. Masks and Ghosts): an extreme research on feminine look presented in giant hyperglossy pictures where you see the very limit of total corruption of beauty and its transitory nature. Shocking images indeed. It’s make up that imitates illness, violence, abuse, incontinence, decomposition, but you feel overwhelmed, as it’s too believable and bleeding. At the same moment, I had the idea to compare these pictures to some of Marina Bychkova’s famous dolls. I think that also Marina is making an outstanding research on body and on the concept of “eternal”.

“Il tempo fugge”, lo si tenga a mente. Mi è capitato la settimana scorsa di visitare l’ultima mostra di Giovanni Gastel “Maschere e Spettri”: una ricerca estrema sull’aspetto femminile, presentata in immagini giganti e iper-patinate dove si vede il limite della totale corruzione della bellezza e la sua natura transitoria. Immagini scioccanti. È il trucco che imita malattia, violenza, abuso, incontinenza, decomposizione. Ma ci si sente sopraffatti, perché l’effetto è troppo credibile e angosciante. Contemporaneamente, mi è venuto in mente di paragonare qste immagini a qualcuna delle famose bambole di Marina Bychkova. Penso che anche Marina stia facendo una ricerca straordinaria sul corpo e sul concetto di “eterno”.
