Dolls to tell

Dolls play a particular role when they, in a protected environment, e.g. help abused children to report about their experience. It’s when the interviewer uses dolls to re-act the event, or asks the child to indicate on the doll’s body how things happened. It’s a very difficult, a very sensitive task, and somehow a controversial one: a doll might encourage the child to engage in fantasy, thus altering or contaminating or inventing the reality. Actually, a friend in the police told me that many children tend to innocently tell what happened – tell in words, even without dolls – at risk of being not believed or listened to! So maximum attention must be paid to any possible behaviour change they might show.
*

Silence or awareness?

Dolls can be effective testimonials when it comes to addressing social issues to a big audience and in an attentional way. No pietism, no rhethoric: irony and unexpected players (2 male dolls) can convey the message. Silence VS HIV awareness is here highlitghted with an emblematic couple situation.

Aesthetic surprises

Furga dolls are renowned for their face sculpt, recalling those tipically tender puppy features: rounded cheeks, wide eyes, little nose, soft hair. But it is with the enhancement of those dark and arched eyebrows and with the sole use of color and light that, to my surprise, this pic adds a transgender twist to the same face. It’s ipnotic.

Doll News cover preview

Here it is, as a cover preview. There will it be as a paper issue: in the hands of Doll Collectors' Club Italia members, next Sunday in Milan; and at the same time on slideshare, for you to download it ad libitum. Mind the headline "SONO UN OGGETTO?" (i.e. "Am I an object?") because it includes future initiatives.

E' qui come anteprima cover. E sarà là in versione cartacea: nelle mani dei soci Collectors' Club Italia, domenica prox a Milano; allo stesso tempo, sarà anche in donwload gratuito a piacere per voi su slideshare. Occhio all'headline "SONO UN OGGETTO?" perché include future iniziative.

Purposely misplaced

A show-window in Berlin. No fashion. No cool. No trendy. Just dusty and colourless women shoes and sandals in a very poor layout. BUT a detail: Barbie dolls used as an attention getter. Purposely misplaced, not so directly product-related, not for sale, but interestingly within a child’s visual field. Triggering granny’s buying impulse when strolling around?
*
Vetrina a Berlino.

Fashioncamp findings

Unexpectedly, and doll-related. Kitdolls: 5 handmade rag dolls with a personality (rock, dark, punk, hippie, romantica) to support kitplastic, recycled plastic bijoux brand. Le Chou Chou: miniature teacups & saucers, pastries & C as jewels – maybe doll jewels too!

Fashioncamp!

Today and tomorrow, fashioncamp in Milan, a barcamp on the state and/or the future of fashion. I’ve been the very first speaker of this event this morning, presenting FashionDollCult-urecamp aka “Dolls reflect (on) fashion”. I’ve uploaded the file on slideshare and hope it will be available and downloadable asap. The green face in the pic is me. Supported by a bunch of dear friends, found lots of people, had some surprising meeting, spotted many many hints and interesting tracks to explore.

Before it crumbles

Visit, if in Berlin, Marina Bychkova dolls ehibition. These purposely overexposed bodies are very evocative of our human, not only doll-related, fragility. No ostentation - rather sthg more intimate and sad.

Venus match

Taking for granted that dolls have modified features (impossible tiny noses, big eyes, heartshaped mouths and so on) and yet attractive, let’s focus on Venus. The very “vis polemica” of this face-to-face comparison by isolavirtuale is in exactly reproducing the plastic-surgical Venus of today, a poor unhappy unsure woman, who will never be as serene as Botticelli’s Venus.
*

Not an arch, a bow

Louise Bourgeois' "Arch of hysteria", as a sculptural reflection on body expression much more beyond any doll poseability, slept in my blog-folder in a sort of waiting list. But with the author's death yesterday, is now out here for a deferent bow, not only an arch.
