Other meringues? WAKE UP!

Magnificent meringuemorphic head on a dollymorphic and very dollcultural moka by Vanni Cuoghi for The White Gallery, Milan. Pls notice those monumental ears on top of the powdered beehive. This work is part of a collective and thematic series of 63 OOAK moka machines modified by 61 artists. The project has been exhibited under the name "WAKE UP!" and it's a touching hommage to the city of Naples, to the coffee culture and to an Italian design icon as the little Bialetti moka.

meringONE, the day

The meringONE day is today, and I'm not there. Long story. Tried to get the things done even without me. So this is the poster Emma Gilardi designed for the event. I wish Antonio Russo, president of Doll Collectors' Club Italia, the whole (very reduced) staff, all the contestants, dealers ans visitors a very meringued day in Calenzano.

Barbie hair chandelier

When the kitsch goes up, up, up, it may even reach the ceiling - ceiling from which a chandelier is suspended, made with ash-blonde Barbie hair skeins: not luminous filaments, but heads and heads of Barbie hair.

Sorry, I don't know the author of this work, but will gladly edit this post if someone tells me something more.

Wired dolls

Benedetta Mori Ubaldini is a peculiar scultor, as she creates with balloons and wire – the very kind of wire-net you would use in the countryside to protect your rabbits or chickens. She folds and curves and paints the material to obtain smaller or bigger animals and little or bigger figurines – some of them really dollylike, and they all share an extraordinary lightness and transparency. So they are present and absent wherever you put them. Also when the story is a bit disquieting as in this “rats and babies” installation.

Analytic anatomy

This is a cha-hakobi doll – a small automaton serving tea - in pieces though, kinda ready for an anatomy table, from the KARAKURI exhibition now on display in Turin. I don’t know why, more than by the all-dressed automaton dolls, I was moved by the naked parts, with their smooth wood essences, their elegant structure, their essential design, their gentle harmony. And we also are talking about antiquities, dating back to the Edo era (1603-1868), yet somehow anticipating the “friendly robot” philosophy in contemporary Japan.

The topos of black

Vintage trio. Mourning trio? I don’t know, although this black dress code could mean anything. It’s the topos of black. However, the three (dolls) are silent, don’t ask questions and look more respectful than most of the fashion-noisy and socialite-skueaky images out there.

Trio vintage. Trio in lutto?
