McQueen’s McDoll McAd

Fashion advertising recognizes the power of dolls - even that fetish, the woodoo, the suggestive, the mischievous, the evocative, the archaic power of dolls. It is the case with Steven Klein’s shooting for Alexander McQueen s/s 2014 campaign, with a OOAK doll perfectly doubling and almost obfuscating Kate Moss’ unmistakable features. Will McQueen’s McDoll in a (memorable) McAd open a thread of similarly conceived images?

telling the toy story

Michael Wolf, a Hong Kong-based German artist, created an impressive installation on toys' seriality, in a pop mix of workers portraits in Chinese factories during work, played with/beloved dolls (many many Barbies among them) collected after painstaking flea market tours, and cheap made in China toys. The result of this effort are hypercrowded walls evoking feelings of anxiety, love, fear, curiosity, avidity... The making of this project, witnessed in these photos, is also involving.

thx Carlo Porrini for this suggestion!

Barbie’s spin

I will not insist on the fact that an artist felt the impulse of torturing Barbie – namely, grilling her top round and creating on his website a fake Barbie-Q magazine cover plus a couple of videos to underline the event. Because, despite the scary video, the actual work is extremely fine and minimal: an opaline plexiglas rectangle framing a black box where a skewed, silver-plated Barbie waits for you to interact, i.e. get closer and allow a photocell to spin her, Barbie, slowly hypnotically round and round. Gabriele Pisaneschi aka unlegol, the author, likes to insinuate that a doll/a toy can be alive and bleeding: his Barbie is red inside in fact, and her horizontally sliced hips are a little bit heart-shaped.

Vacuum packed couples

What are you seeing here: vacuum packed couples asking to be depacked, with their harsh colours and their incongruously shining skin - forever young and looking like plastic - or rather consenting prisoners? Or again, plastic dolls to be never removed, perversely preserved for a future Wunderkammer? Is this photo metaphoring the asphyxia of some real life or even synthetic relationships.

Weredolls and other rencontres

Merry-go-round faces, weredolls and wererabbits, celebrities in the dark, confusing landscapes. These are Carlo Golia’s photos, which I discovered at step 09. What do they have to do with dolls? They are an extremization, a gigantic doll-parody. If you take and make a glittered Barbie bigger and older, you’ll obtain someone who’s perfect for a Luna Park. It you take the tender toy-rabbit and cut off his right ear, you’ll obtain kinda lysergic monster. If you subtract a dazed Elvis figurine the smoothness of the vinyl, he’ll be kinda lifeless shell singing at night. A deformed and parallele hyperreality is in ambush for us in these images. Let’s be careful next time we play.

Barbie hair chandelier

When the kitsch goes up, up, up, it may even reach the ceiling - ceiling from which a chandelier is suspended, made with ash-blonde Barbie hair skeins: not luminous filaments, but heads and heads of Barbie hair.

Sorry, I don't know the author of this work, but will gladly edit this post if someone tells me something more.

“We are family”

This is the title of the very dollcultural composition above, a work belonging to the "under construction" series by the artistic duo known with the combo name of alexandfelix. Looks like a mysteriously organised taxonomy, or a ad libitum collage, or a bi-dimensional Wunderkammer featuring – to my/our amazement - generations of fashion dolls’ heads with a preponderant presence of Barbie & friends, plus a number of related knick-offs. However, the artists underline it’s real sceneries and real stuff. No computer creations.

Blytheads

The aesthetic contamination among human beings, dolls and animals finds in Blythe a great actress. But the fashion design industry doesn’t joke, too: see the 2 pics from a show in Tokyo, featuring creations by Ne-Net design. Therefore, a ring: anthropomorphic doll > zoomorphic fashion > fashionmorphic human beings? Someone. Ouch.

Qualcuno. Ahia.
