The Art(work) of aging

Making Barbie older is too much an attractive task – more to graphic designers than to OOAkers, so far. Please meet this usefully photoshopped Barbie: her aging is not so glamourous, not so diva-like, all in all just something ordinary. She could almost be any woman, gracefully accepting her plastic wrinkles, haha.

Looking sweet

Glaced eyes, eyed sweets, commestible tits. Stop. This is just a visual-emotional comparison between a hand-made doll eyes backstage pic by Clara Fornari (see previous post) and the famous, rounded, sensual Sicilian sweet things called Minne di S. Agata, literally S. Agata's tits, forever recalling the Saint’s martyrdom – she was in fact mutilated her breast.

Occhietti glassati, dolcetti occhiuti, tettine da mangiare. Stop.

A noir Little red cap

Red, however noir. We love sneaking a glance at a now totally one-of-a-kind, noir Little Red Riding Hood, a landmark in fairytales, Grimm bros version: Clara Fornari, the author, created everything from zero - all the dolls and their clothing, the props, the scenes, the photos… the book published after this effort. This mise-en-scène of the tale is actually just a small part of her wider project somehow reflecting on, and redesigning the borders of beauty, good, and evil. Backstage photos are a true aesthetic coup-de-foudre, and a perfect completion to understanding how Clara’s little book became such a jewel. Want to buy a copy at a surprisingly friendly price directly from her? Just click here.

Collecting is connecting

… connecting passions, to be clear. Calligrams are images made with words, a graphic production I particularly love and occasionally experiment for friends and clients. So gladly will I welcome here and now this Barbie calligram, summarizing in one image my dollypherous (say, dollcultural) and calligrammic passions. More, among the blogs I frequently check, one is about calligrams and I suggest you visit it – it’s created by a friend of mine, calligram cultor and designer.

Let’s head to the pastry

I’m not that gluttonous, but this vintage Francie doll is. So, out for a doll collectors brunch last Sunday, she didn’t miss fine cheese nor sweets – always on her mind. No, on her head. Let’s be a bit self-ironical, sometimes.
*
Anzi, in testa. Siamo un po’ autoironici qualche volta, dai.

A matter of dimensions

They are the dolls of the dolls of the dolls. And at the same time, they are a trend in adversitsing or fashion shootings because of the straniant, dimensional effects they can create: I’m talking about those hand painted little human beings typical of model-making - however decontextualized.
*

Hey, what were you day-dreaming? Despite its erotic appeal – or maybe because of it - this picture I’m showing was just about selling the blue gloves that could fit a number of 1:6 male action figures. Found on eBay and IMHO, the seller is well aware of the message such statuesque pose may convey.
*

Dull doll

If Barbie was meant as the “alpha” character in her own doll saga, Ken is a “beta”… so, let’s spend a word on him. But to my surprise, in my opinion and tastes, the pale and slim (almost skinny) Ken of the 60s stands better aesthetic chances to survive the decades when directly compared to the quite stocky and possibly, say, dull Ken of the 80s.
*

Mimosa & mimesis

On this very day, I wish you all took a view of this short movie - Women body, by Lorella Zanardo, an Italian manager who punched our consciences documenting the twisted perception and the aberrant promotion of women bodies in our media. It’s not all. In a day when mimosas are a symbol of emancipation/engagement, I provocatively add this fashion sketch from flickr (designed for a fake woman who mimics a doll?) where the yellow flower decorates an outfit that I’m leaving to yr comments.
*

Originally in Italian, the movie is available in English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Greek - just check the link above.

Longa manus

I’m not here to please all this “go gothic”. But it is a sort of childish chill or ambivalent fascinated fun for skeletons, that I collected the following images for comparison: a hand-bracelet by Delfina Delettrez + a Barbie doll reminiscent of her sculpture-jewels + a Sybarite doll with wedding ring, as interpreted by doll collector and OOAKer Veik11 on flickr.
*
