So cute. Soo-ky

Learn this new name: Soo-ky. This poetic creature comes from Chan Park’s, a Nippo-Korean Milan based artist, imaginary world. She, i.e. Soo-Ky, has no arms and cannot embrace other creatures, but she’s got a friend, a little bird, dearest to her heart - maybe it’s her heart. Or maybe both Soo-Ky and the little bird are alter-ego emanations of the artist… soon exhibiting in Turin and in Milan. What does this all in all have to do with dolls? Well, Soo-Ky might become a doll.
*

Silence! Dolls speak.

Taking dolls seriously, depicting serious issues. I’m here including a moving sample from Paolo Ventura’s work “War Souvenir”. It’s a poignant photo, you could cut its silence with a knife, simultaneously understanding the story - and it’s made with action figures and/or dolls, in a hyperdetailed doll-scaled setting. Italian artist in NYC, Ventura makes us meditate using his unusual, yet so credible imagery.

Hommage to Mantegna

… this is (also) what my friend mame wanted to do, I believe, when she set this shot portraying her Marina Bychkova Enchanted Doll. Neither dissacration nor dramatization. Rather, a silent contemplation, a research on light of which the doll is seemingly aware.

Fan fun

Adult doll collecting implies doll playing (no, it’s not always about boring dusty shelves) and a big part of the fun is taking pictures. Irony is one of the fav keys.

FashionCamp, dollwise

Elusive profile

“Elusive” is better than “exclusive”, and it applies to sculptural creatures like Manon. Manon is a 40cm tall doll, a black, ebony beauty. Her creator Nunzio Carbone, Italian origins and French esprit, imagined her and her friends as top models with limited edition outfits – consistently, Fashion Doll Agency is the company brandname. However I’m not so interested in such concept, which seems logical when it comes to fashion dolls. I’m much more intrigued by their idol-like design and their smooth, essential shape. They are dolls, AND something else beyond the idea of "ethnic".

Unconventional marketing applied

A small example. A small company. A small team, including a creative doll collector. A quick 1:6 scaled casting. Some small handmade doll T-shirts with logo. A small text promoting the company’s services. A light portfolio shared on flickr and other SM and sent to clients. And maybe the same dolliful staff showing itself in trade fairs. And they are the talk of the day - instead of a dull brochure. Full story here.

Piccolo esempio.

Darlene + doll

I’m hesitant about the meaning of these pictures of a girl and her doll in Nicaragua. Too easily, it would be a way to just confront with, and speak against poverty. Interestingly, it would rather be an excuse to document the diffusion of an hollow and dominant physical model, a blonde-long legs-overnational one. Or a visual device to distract the observer from something else happening in the background? Who knows. Keep smiling, Darlene.
*
Continua a sorridere, Darlene.

Thx Ross for suggesting these photos from flickr.

Recycled best friends

A toy, a dog: possibly a child’s best friends. UK based artist Robert Bradford recycles discarded plastic toys bits and pieces, combs and buttons, brushes, clothes pegs - and of course doll and figurine parts – transforming them into colorful pets, fake weapons and fantastic figures all of them promoted to the noble rank of new, desirable and ironical plastic-on-wood sculptures. Conclusion: never throw that odd Barbie arm away, as it has a potential.

Hot headpieces

Beyond all that LadyGagaïste delirium influencing many doll collectors and creators - or maybe thanks to this phenomenon – we can now enjoy comparing a visionnaire illustration by Berlin based visual artist Olaf Hajek, and a genuine, handmade doll wig by Italian OOAKer Nickis, who makes this on demand for any fashion doll. In both cases, nested in (or towering on) a voluptuous hair, we find little treasures.

Invitation to the ball

This is a scary doll. Therefore fascinating. She was taking part to the contest named “THE OTHERS – the dark side of the dolls” held in Rome last w-e. I don’t know who is the author (but I’ll detect soon who). I’m however impressed by her “eros + thanatos” (love + death) concept, to me reminiscent of the maudit poets of the late XIX century. “Invitation to the ball” is her name - a sort of serious memento - and the ball is a danse macabre, this time.

Questa è una bambola che fa paura. Eppure affascinante. Partecipava al contest named “THE OTHERS – the dark side of the dolls” lo scorso week end a Roma.

Tattoo, too

Gene used to be a cinema diva in her doll concept and a doll fad in the late 90s - quite faded concept right now, maybe cannibalized by BJDs and other bolder dolls. But Chan Park, doll and tattoo artist and a nippo-korean in Milan, gave her a new allure exasperating the contrast between her garçonne face and an intricated motif all over her body.

Morton Bartlett’s (just) dolls

Morton Bartlett (USA, 1909-1992) made dolls. 15 dolls. Dolls? Maybe more dummies, or statues with some articulation. Half-scaled, pre-teenage, mostly female, precisely sculpted in plaster then painted and completed with wigs, dressed and photographed by the self-taught author, they still make a sort of disquieting unicum in vintage mood, IMHO alluding to the weak borders between an innocent and a morbid interest. Now exhibited in Turin under The Museum of Everything concept.

Morton Bartlett (USA, 1909-1992) fece bambole. 15 bambole. Bambole? E sono ora e fino al prossimo 29 agosto esposte a Torino alla Pinacoteca Agnelli sotto il concept The Museum of Everything.

Articulatory exercise

The extreme articulation of this BJD doll seems to me a body explosion just frozen a moment before total laceration. A CAD design still floating on the pc screen. A sort of exoskeleton or pre-armour for a galactic battle. A poseability exercise ended in selfreferential contemplation. A fragile non-doll.

My Muse, next Muse

My Muse is basically a concept. It first appeared last year as a virtual, downloadable free magazine packed with wonderful pics and original illustrations all about dolls. Now it appears as a new pocket abstract book, featuring additional new contents. Pamela De Lorenzi, the author, has a real penchant for playful pics, detailed doll dioramas (she used to create sets for Barbie’s magazine photostories), dramatic dark backgrounds for sensual shootings and so on. I asked her to create some new pics showing kinda interaction between dolls and the little book. And here they are. Want to buy a copy at a surprisingly friendly price directly from her? Just click here. Yes, the Coffee Cake Dolls website too is by Pamela.

My Muse è sostanzialmente un concept.

Furry dolls or bodily beasts?

Again in the hybridolls topic. Wes Anderson’s Mr. Fox characters are to me more attractive when directly compared with humans: it’s then the moment of the full revelation of their ambition although 1:6 scaled, not when they just play a stop-motion movie role in their all fake world.
*
