Doll News #63 is out!

Doll News #63 is out on slideshare, downloadable for free. In its paper version, it will be handed out to DCCI members during Calenzano "Burlesque" contest/ convention on November 25th. This issue is all about the sense of proportions. And by that, I'm not only talking about the body of the dolls. Please, browse and enjoy.

A dollcultural Deposition

Among dusty, capsized doll heads, hit by a ray of light, lies Susie Sad Eyes. My friend Emma's doll took part to a very (con)temporary and inspired unofficial installation some weeks ago (or months? doesn't matter) in Paris. And the mood of this Deposition is still amazing to me.

Tra teste di bambola polverose, capovolte, colpita da un raggio di luce, giace Susie Sad Eyes. La bambola della mia amica Emma ha preso parte ad una molto (con)temporanea e ispirata istallazione non ufficiale qualche settimana fa (o mese? non importa) a Parigi. E il mood di questa Deposizione ancor mi meraviglia.
 

Sabina Feroci’s dollcultural papier-mâché

 

Not dolls, but dollcultural suggestions seen in Brescia at Studio LB contemporary art. Sabina Feroci’s sculptures freeze in papier-mâché gestures and postures of boys and girls (even if I thought they were all girls). Compared to the collection of the same author I happened to discover two years ago, this new wave of figurines is even more evocative, intense and essential, recalling threedimesional illustrations of the finest, pastel-like kind, and accessorized with a bit of pop culture. You have to touch and caress them (even if I didn’t dare) because the feel is very smooth and warm, and their presence, fills the room both with sience and imaginary movement. The proportions are also interesting (even if they are not scale 1.1) – between doll and real person. So far, however, I’m just the happy owner of ”Meeting Sabina Feroci – a journey of Papier-mâché Dolls” a lovely illustrated book, complete with transfers (even if written in Chinese). Look at its title: yes, the author calls her creations “dolls” – interesting, isn’t it?

 

 

Non bambole, ma suggestioni dollculturali, quelle dello Studio LB contemporary art a Brescia. Le sculture di Sabina Feroci congelano nella cartapesta gesti e pose di bambini e bambine come quelli veri (anche se all’inizio ho pensato che fossero tutte bambine). In confronto alla collezione della stessa autrice che mi è capitato di scoprire due anni fa, questa nuova ondata di figurine è ancora più evocativa, intensa ed essenziale. Ricorda illustrazioni tridimensionali delle più fini e pastellose, con l’aggiunta di un tocco di pop culture. Bisogna toccarle e accarezzarle (anche se io non ho osato) perché la sensazione tattile è molto liscia e calda; la loro presenza riempie lo spazio sia di silenzio sia di movimento immaginario. Le proporzioni stesse sono interessanti (anche se non in scala 1.1) – una via di mezzo tra bambole e persone. Finora, però, sono solo la fortunata proprietaria di ”Meeting Sabina Feroci – a journey of Papier-mâché Dolls” un bel libro illustrato e corredato di decalcomanie (anche se scritto in cinese). Occhio al titolo: sì, l’autrice chiama “bambole” le sue creazioni – interessante, vero?

Dollcultural Ferienhaus

"Ferienhaus für Terroristen I", i.e. "Holiday House for Terrorists I" is the title of this architectural-sculptural work by German artist Thomas Schütte - and we are namely talking about a maquette. Now, which kind of terrorist dolls would be as lucky as to live their doll lives in such spaces filled with good design? This is not the typical doll house (which I would like to write "typicaldollhouse" to emphasize). I like the incongruous aspect of this hypothesis.

"Ferienhaus für Terroristen I", ossia "Casa delle vacanze per terroristi I" è il titolo di quest'opera di architettura-scultura dell'artista tedesco Thomas Schütte - e, propriamente, stiamo parlando di un modellino. Ora, quali bambole terroriste sarebbero così fortunate da vivere le loro vite bambolari in spazi simili, pieni di buon design? Qsta non è la tipica casa di bambola (che anzi, scriverei tutto attaccato per enfatizzare tipicacasadibambola, toh). Amo l'aspetto incongruo di quest'ipotesi.

Dollcultural Power of We

Questa non è afasia, ma la sequenza di Fibonacci della solidarietà e della crescita, delle iniziative potenti, delle amicizie indimenticabili, delle vite trascorse insieme, delle ricerca che porta risultati, delle vittorie di squadra, dei cambiamenti molto auspicati. Persone e non numeri che veicolano il potere del Noi.

telling the toy story

Michael Wolf, a Hong Kong-based German artist, created an impressive installation on toys' seriality, in a pop mix of workers portraits in Chinese factories during work, played with/beloved dolls (many many Barbies among them) collected after painstaking flea market tours, and cheap made in China toys. The result of this effort are hypercrowded walls evoking feelings of anxiety, love, fear, curiosity, avidity... The making of this project, witnessed in these photos, is also involving.

Michael Wolf, artista tedesco trapiantato a Hong Kong, ha creato un'installazione impressionante sulla serialità del giocattolo, realizzando un mix pop di operai ritratti al lavoro nelle fabbriche cinesi, bambole giocate/amate (tra cui molte molte Barbie) raccolte dopo instancabili tour di mercatini, e giocattolacci made in China. Il risultato di qsto sforzo sono muri iperaffollati che evocano sentimenti di ansia, amore, paura, curiosità, avidità... E anche la preparazione di qsto progetto, documentata nelle foto, è coinvolgente.

Good grammar is sexy

 

Why is this doll of mine reading erotic stories? Here’s how. Far from being a grammar nazi, I have nevertheless created months ago a facebook group about spotting/fighting examples of poor language in media. Sic stantibus rebus (i.e., in these circumstances) I happened to intercept a like-minded photocontest named “Good grammar is sexy”, and accepted to send my creative entry. I did it dollcultural. I made a donkey-eared hat for my Momoko and took a webcam pic. Look, she wears a baby doll but this won’t make her sexier (I imagined), since she’s not paying attention to her language, where she could well do it. Now, the funny thing is that my entry won me abook. Yes, the one you see above, signed and handed by the author. Thanks Inachis Io!

Com’è che le mie bambole leggono racconti erotici? Ecco qui. Lungi dall’essere una grammar nazi, ho nondimeno creato un po’ di mesi fa un gruppo su facebook per il gusto di scovare/combattere la sciatteria del linguaggio dei media. Sic stantibus rebus (stando così le cose), mi è capitato di intercettare un photocontest – chiamato “Good grammar is sexy” – dove la si pensava allo stesso modo e ho accettato di spedire la mia interpretazione. L’ho fatta dollculturale. Ho fabbricato un cappello con le orecchie d’asino per la mia Momoko, e ho scattato con la webcam. Vedete, lei indossa un baby doll, ma ciò non la rende più sexy (ho immaginato), perché non cura il linguaggio, mentre potrebbe ben farlo. Il buffo è che qsta mia entry mi ha fatto vincere un libro.
